The skin naturally uses vitamin E (a-tocopherol) to protect lipid structures including membranes.
Vitamin C and E work synergistically, when vitamin E is oxidised by free radicals, it is regenerated
in the membrane by vitamin C. The combination of 15% l-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and 1%
a-tocopherol (vitamin E) provided significantly better protection against eryhtema and sunburn

cell formation than either one alone. (Pinnell, S. UV photoprotection by combination topical
antioxidants vitamin C and vitamin E - JAAD - 2003) Vitamin E neutralises free radicals
and replenishes skin lipids.
