WHAT IS SKIN NEEDLING?
Microneedling (also known as Skin Needling) can affect your skins overall appearance. Learn about the benefits & aftercare process for optimal results.
You may have heard of skin needling, a clinical procedure that aims to increase collagen and elastin synthesis by triggering the body’s natural healing process by puncturing the skin with tiny, controlled needles. If you’ve been wondering what is microneedling and whether it’s the same as skin needling, be assured these two terms are synonymous.
This article will act as an informative guide to microneedling, including the benefits, possible side effects and general aftercare recommendations. Microneedling is not a service provided by SkinCeuticals, however, we do provide some skincare suggestions for a SkinCeuticals post-procedure regime for sensitised skin.
WHAT IS SKIN NEEDLING?
Microneedling uses an electronic device with multiple tiny needles to puncture the epidermis (and sometimes also the dermis) in a precise, controlled way. The depth of these micro channels can be adjusted to suit your skin type and concerns. As these tiny wounds heal, collagen and elastin are produced, healing and boosting the skin from within. Skin needling can be somewhat uncomfortable, however numbing cream is used to minimise discomfort.
MICRONEEDLING BENEFITS
Skin needling can have impressive visible results for people with acne scarring and can also target fine lines, wrinkles. Hyperpigmentation and discolouration can also be reduced, although there is a risk of increased hyperpigmentation for some skin types. Skin texture is another main target of skin needling, with strong potential for enhancement in the form of minimised pores and sagging.
WHAT TO AVOID BEFORE SKIN NEEDLING
To prepare skin for microneedling avoid any hair removal procedures or injectables on the face for two weeks prior to your appointment. One week before, cease using retinol and exfoliating acids within your skincare routine. For more personalised advice, speak to your microneedling expert.
SKIN NEEDLING SIDE EFFECTS
Immediately after the procedure, it’s normal to experience redness, swelling and a small amount of bleeding. Your skin will feel similar to a sunburn and may become prone to itching in the days following your appointment. The most noticeable side effects should resolve within approximately 24 hours and the rest within a few days.
MICRONEEDLING AFTERCARE
Considering the possible side effects, it’s important to follow expert advice following a skin needling session. Caring for skin after skin needling is key. Resolving side effects can make a big difference in the quality of results achieved.
RESCHEDULE INTENSE EXERCISE
It’s important to avoid any strenuous physical activity that may result in sweating and flushing for at least 24 hours after your microneedling appointment. This procedure leaves the pores open and vulnerable to incursions from sweat, bacteria and impurities. By avoiding exercise, the risk of bacteria from the skin’s surface being carried into the pores by sweat is reduced.
SKIP THE HOT WATER
Steaming hot showers or baths should also be avoided after microneedling. Similarly to intense exercise, hot water can also cause the skin to sweat and flush. Use tepid or room temperature water to wash your face and try to keep your showers and baths warm rather than hot to allow the skin to naturally repair itself without disruption .
AVOID DIRECT SUN EXPOSURE
After microneedling, your sensitised skin is likely to experience increased photosensitivity. It’s advisable to minimise direct sun exposure all year round, however it’s especially important to avoid UV rays after your procedure. Let your skin rest for at least 24 hours before applying sunscreen, after which we recommend using a broad spectrum formula such as our Ultra Facial Defense SPF 50+.
ALWAYS READ THE LABEL. FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS FOR USE. Apply 20 minutes before sun exposure. Sunscreen is only one part of sun protection so wear protective clothing and seek shade. Avoid prolonged sun exposure. Reapply every 2 hours and after swimming, towelling and perspiring in accordance with directions.
STAY HYDRATED
Skin needling prompts the skin’s natural internal healing process. Ensuring you stay hydrated by drinking lots of water will support this process.
DON'T TOUCH YOUR FACE
If you’re wondering what should I put on my face after microneedling, the answer certainly isn’t your fingers. Skin needling creates thousands of micro wounds in the skin. Just as with any wound, the area needs to be kept free of bacteria to avoid infection.
It’s best to avoid touching your face as much as possible for several days after a skin needling procedure. If you do need to be hands on, wash your hands thoroughly with an antibacterial soap first. If you have any concerns that you might have an infection, consult a physician.
GO MAKEUP-FREE
Unfortunately wearing makeup is not advisable for at least 24 hours after your skin needling procedure. It may be tempting to try and cover up post-procedure redness with makeup, however with your pores more open than usual, pores may become blocked and may cause blemishes.
AVOID HARSH SKINCARE INGREDIENTS
After skin needling, some skincare products from your regular routine may have ingredients that are too harsh for sensitised skin.
It's best to avoid products containing retinol or retinoids, as well as those containing vitamin C. Chemical exfoliants including hydroxy acids like glycolic and lactic acid should also be avoided. Furthermore, we recommend introducing these ingredients back into your routine gradually, rather than all at once.
IMPLEMENT A GENTLE SKINCARE ROUTINE WITH SKINCEUTICALS PRODUCTS
In terms of what to use 24-48 hours after microneedling, we recommend a gentle yet effective routine: Start with our Gentle Cleanser, formulated with allantoin to promote a healthy skin barrier. This cleanser is comforting and hydrating, making it well suited to sensitive and post-procedure skin. Next, tone with our Phyto Corrective Essence Hydrating Mist with hyaluronic acid and glycerin to help visibly reduce redness.
Further hydrate your vulnerable skin without clogging pores by gently smoothing on a few drops of the SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Gel Serum. This corrective serum is formulated with cucumber and thyme as well as hyaluronic acid to comfort and hydrate. For intense hydration, try a masque designed for post-procedure skin such as our Phyto Corrective Mask.
