Thermage® at a Glance

Thermage® technology delivers the energy of radiofrequency (RF) waves into the collagen found in the visible outer layer of skin (the epidermis), the deeper layer (the dermis), and a fat layer below the dermis that also contains a web of collagen fibres. The heat produced by the RF waves separates water molecules from the collagen fibres, causing them to contract and thicken for an immediate skin tightening effect. These remodelled collagen strands are now stronger and able to provide greater “lift” to the skin, for an improved appearance. The pulses of RF energy also encourage production of new collagen over a period of time, for the long-lasting results of Thermage® treatment.

What are the Risks Associated with Thermage®

The technology delivers heat energy to the deeper, dermal layers of the skin, using a handpiece that regulates the temperature to stay within a range that remodels existing collagen and generates new production, but without overheating the surface layers of skin. Possible effects on the skin may include:

  • Surface irregularities—not usually evident immediately post-treatment, but may appear up to 1 or more months post-treatment.
  • Numbness or tingling that typically resolves within a short period of time, but may persist for several weeks.
  • Overheating in the upper layers of skin may cause burns and subsequent blister and scab formation. There is also a possibility of scar formation.
  • Lumps or nodules under the skin may occur primarily in the neck area - these usually resolve within 1 or 2 weeks without long term complications. Swelling may occur and typically resolves within 5 days, but can persist up to several weeks..
