What is LHA?

Lipohydroxy acid (LHA) is a salicylic acid derivative and another one of the beta-hydroxy acids. Used in skincare products, LHA promotes skin cell turnover via targeted chemical exfoliation of dead skin cells, decongests pores, and helps to refine the skin’s surface. The three main properties of LHA are its lipophillic nature, its slower release and ability to soften the skin.

  • Lipophilic nature: LHA dissolves well in oils and lipids, making it beneficial for unclogging pores of excess sebum, dead skin cells and impurities.
  • Slower release: LHA penetrates the skin more slowly, making it a gentler exfoliating option.
  • Keratolytic action: LHA can break down rough or scaly skin, making the skin softer and smoother.
