What is Silymarin?

Silymarin, or milk thistle extract, is a powerful antioxidant derived from the milk thistle plant, identifiable by large prickly leaves and white veins. The active ingredient used in skincare formulations is extracted from the seeds.
As an antioxidant, Silymarin is known for its ability to protect the skin by combating oxidative stress, which occurs when UV exposure and other environmental aggressors cause a build-up of free radicals. Over time, this contributes to skin cellular damage and accelerates skin ageing. Oxidative stress contributes to the breakdown of collagen and elastin, leading to the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone.
Its antioxidant properties also extend to minimising the oxidation of sebum (the skin's natural oils) in the pores, and that contribute to blemish formation.
In SkinCeuticals Silymarin CF, silymarin is combined with L-ascorbic acid (pure vitamin C), ferulic acid, and salicylic acid, in a first-of-its-kind daily topical antioxidant formula that that provides protection against skin-damaging free radicals and helps prevent oil oxidation that contributes to blemish formation in oily and blemish-prone skin.
Silymarin can also be found in SkinCeuticals Antioxidant Lip Repair Moisturiser, which also contains vitamin E to revitalise lips in a hydrating cream.
