Learn more about Hyaluronic Acid

ingredient spotlight: hyaluronic acid

Recognized as one of the most effective hydrating ingredients in skincare, hyaluronic acid is essential in maintaining skin's moisture levels. In addition to providing surface hydration, high levels of hyaluronic acid are correlated with an improved appearance in skin firmness, smoothness, and plumpness.

hyaluronic acid explained

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a natural humectant composed of disaccharide chains (sugar) found in every tissue of the human body. It is present in high concentrations within the skin and the fluids around the eyes and joints. As the body's natural hydrator, this hydrophilic (water-loving) molecule acts like a sponge to attract and retain 1,000 times its own weight in water, making it an excellent moisturiser when applied topically.

What does hyaluronic acid do?

Hyaluronic Acid is best known for its hydrating capabilities on the surface of skin, reducing signs of fine lines and wrinkles by improving texture and plumping skin. In other parts of the body, it has been proven to have a significant positive effect on alleviating joint pain that is particularly associated with aging. It is a naturally occurring molecule in the human body and is found in the largest amounts between skin cells, inside joints, within the eye sockets, and in other tissues where it can help retain collagen, increase moisture, and provide elasticity and flexibility. In the skin, these features are what allows for younger-looking, plump skin.

What does hyaluronic acid do for skin?

Hyaluronic Acid helps the skin to stay firm longer and minimise fine lines, by attracting and retaining water. While hyaluronic acid is naturally present throughout the body, 50% is concentrated within skin tissue, notably in the surface layers. Hyaluronic Acid draws water to these surface layers of the skin, as well as into the deeper dermal layers, where it acts like a scaffold for essential proteins such as collagen and elastin. This molecule however has a short lifecycle in skin, with 30-50% degrading every 24 hours. As we age, the rate at which Hyaluronic Acid is produced slows, with production starts to decrease in the 20s and accelerates in the 40s resulting in decreased levels over time. The combined decline and rapid natural degradation of hyaluronic acid contributes to signs of ageing including dryness, fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin texture, loss of firmness, and loss of facial fullness. When natural production slows, topical application of a Hyaluronic Acid serum allows these benefits to be recaptured in the skin, with a plumped complexion that looks smoother and younger.

What are the benefits of hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic Acid's main benefit is its function as a humectant,  which can draw moisture to the skin and restore hydration. One of the hallmarks of ageing skin is loss of moisture, resulting in decreased firmness, plumpness, and elasticity. Hyaluronic acid is a fundamental molecule involved in maintaining skin's moisture content due to its unique capability to attract and retain water. Thus, topical application of hyaluronic acid can deliver long-lasting hydration while helping skin look and feel smoother, firmer, and appear plumper.

Who should take hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic Acid is an ideal ingredient for all skin types, as it is naturally occurring, oil-free and offers beneficial hydrating properties. It is naturally found in skin and hydrates without sensitisation or leaving an oily residue. While all SkinCeuticals hyaluronic acid serums deliver long-lasting hydration, they are available in a variety of formulations that can also address specific skin concerns, such as fine lines and wrinkles, discolouration, sensitivity, dehydration, and imperfections. Look for a hyaluronic acid formula that addresses your specific skin concern.

Is hyaluronic acid good for oily skin?

Yes - oily skin will still benefit from a Hyaluronic Acid serum. Hyaluronic Acid is beneficial for a wide array of skin types including oily skin. A common misconception is that oily skin does not need additional hydration, however, the opposite is true. Depriving your skin of moisture may cause it to overcompensate and produce even more oil. It is key to note that oily skin is characterised by an excess presence of sebum, and not necessarily an abundance of moisture. Dehydrated skin can result in premature ageing, therefore, it is crucial to ensure that your skin is receiving an ample amount of hydration.

When hydrating oily skin, look for oil free, non-comedogenic formulas to help retain moistures and ingredients that are lightweight but effective. Hyaluronic Acid also contains the ability to retain up to 1000x its weight in water, offering lightweight hydration that will not feel heavy on oily skin. Featured in SkinCeuticals  Hydrating B5, this lightweight moisturising agent has a unique ability to attract and retain moisture in skin, effectively delivering long-lasting hydration without clogging pores.

Are hyaluronic acid serums good for your skin?

Yes! Hyaluronic Acid is a compound which is found naturally in the body, and is responsible for attracting and retaining moisture. However as we age, the amount produced slowly begins to diminish and reduces its ability to perform its primary function, which is to improve  hydration  This ultimately leads to wrinkles, fine lines, and loss of firmness.Depending on the formula and your skin type, when applied topically a hyaluronic acid serum can provide a multitude of benefits to the skin to replace this natural loss. Adding a hyaluronic acid serum to your daily skincare regimen can improve hydration through routine application, and can help improve skin texture and result in a plumped, more youthful looking appearance.
We recommend

SkinCeuticals Hyaluronic Acid Intensifier  , which is formulated with high concentrations of pure hyaluronic acid and is proven to amplify skin’s hyaluronic acid levels, improve skin’s texture, and provide long lasting hydration.

Do you need to apply moisturiser after a Hyaluronic Acid serum?

It is not required to moisturise after applying a Hyaluronic Acid serum, although it is highly recommended. By applying a moisturiser over the serum it will create a hydrating layer over the skin that the Hyaluronic Acid can draw moisture from. This is particularly effective if your environment is dry, whether as a result of the season or use of air conditioning and heating. As Hyaluronic Acid is a humectant, if there is not enough moisture in the atmosphere, it can draw moisture from your skin. Applying a layer of moisturiser will ensure that there is enough available moisture to allow the Hyaluronic Acid to benefit your skin.
